Look, I’m just as disappointed as anyone that Monster Hunter XX’s localization wasn’t announced at e3. But the hatred spewing from the Monster Hunter community is just insane. People are so up in arms, saying how MHW is nothing but a casual and westernized take on the series we love. But the community’s reaction is premature. Ask any Gen 1 fan about the transition from Freedom Unite to Tri. It was the same exact shit. Let’s try and reserve our judgment until we get the game in our hands, okay?
While not all the changes look appealing as a Monster Hunter veteran, I can’t wait to finally play Monster Hunter on a modern console. Sure, fast travel, being able to switch equipment on the fly, and the inclusion of a grappling hook are significant additions, but we have yet to see everything the game has to offer. I want to trust that while these changes were added to give the series more broad appeal, there will still be more difficult content veterans can sink their teeth into.
Going into Generations, I was skeptical of the Hunter Styles and Arts. Sure, the aerial hunter style made weapons like the insect glaive less relevant, but the added layer of customization was a welcomed addition. The leaked gameplay video of World looks far more promising than I anticipated, given my more skeptical mindset reading about all these changes. If you can find the leaked video, tell me the Rathalos and Anjanath throwdown wasn’t amazing.
Worse case, even if Capcom decides to not bring XX over to the US, you always have the option of importing the game.
Edit: I’m glad to see that people are starting to come around. The new footage that has been shown off has done a wonderful job at demonstrating the new features and improvements. As much as I loved Monster Hunter, it has stayed fundamentally the same for over a decade. MHW might be taking many risks with the various changes being made, but as I watch interest for the game grow, I am excited to see what everyone’s reaction will be. Will Monster Hunter finally get the attention it deserves? Will this be the one to finally open western gamers eyes to the beauty that is Monster Hunter? I wholeheartedly believe so.
Will Monster Hunter finally get the attention it deserves? Will this be the one to finally open western gamers eyes to the beauty that is Monster Hunter? I wholeheartedly believe so. At its heart, Monster Hunter World still looks and feels like the series we’ve all grown to adore. Just a little more grown up. A bit wiser. If Capcom plays their cards right, Monster Hunter might just become the next big hit in America, without having to sacrifice its identity. Hopefully, I’ll see plenty of new faces online in MHW. Happy Hunting!
